If you love spending time outdoors on a beautiful deck, basking in the warm sunshine or hosting unforgettable gatherings with friends and family, a reliable and aesthetically pleasing decking is a must. The best example is composite decking.

Composite decking has been gaining popularity among homeowners looking for a low-maintenance and long-lasting outdoor flooring solution that mirrors the beauty of wood without its inherent drawbacks.

If you’re building your deck, or looking to upgrade your home’s current outdoor space, composite decking is certainly worth the try!

What is composite decking?

Composite decking, also known as eco decking, is basically like your regular wood decking, but a lot better.

As the name suggests, a composite deck is made from a “composition” of two or more materials, which is typically a combination of wood fibres (often sourced from recycled materials) and plastic or resin binders.

These wood fibres and plastic binders are mixed in a process called extrusion and then formed into board shapes. This process creates a durable and low-maintenance decking material that is resistant to issues commonly associated with natural wood, such as rot, splintering, and warping.

A composite deck is also designed to be resistant to fading, staining, and moisture, making it suitable for outdoor use without the need for frequent sealing or staining.

Composite decking vs wood decking

If you’re kind of on the fence with either composite or wood decking, here are their main differences and the reasons why composite decking is better for your home in the long run.

Material

The most obvious difference is the material used. Timber decking is made of natural wood, such as pressure-treated lumber, cedar, or tropical hardwoods, while composite decking material is a combination of wood fibres and plastic or resin binders.

Durability

A composite deck is generally more durable than wood decking. They are engineered to withstand Australia’s harsh climate conditions and resist rot, splintering, and warping, which are common issues with timber decking.

Composite decking is also less prone to damage from insects, moisture, and UV rays.

Fade and Stain Resistance

Composite decking is designed to resist fading and staining. The colour and finish of the boards are engineered to withstand prolonged exposure to sunlight without significant colour change. Additionally, a composite deck is less likely to be stained by food, beverages, or other common outdoor substances.

Maintenance

Timber decking typically requires more maintenance than composite decking. Wood decks need regular staining, sealing, and occasional repairs to prevent rot, insect damage, and splintering. A composite deck, on the other hand, is low-maintenance. It does not require staining, sealing, or painting, and can be easily cleaned with soap and water. Longevity

Composite decking tends to have a longer lifespan compared to timber decking. While wood decks can last for many years with proper maintenance, they are more susceptible to rot, insect damage, and weathering.

Safety

A composite deck is designed with safety in mind. It is splinter-free, providing a smooth surface that is comfortable to walk on, even barefoot. The boards are also slip-resistant, reducing the risk of accidents, especially in wet conditions.

Aesthetics

Timber decking offers a natural, traditional aesthetic with its unique wood grain patterns and warmth. The look and feel of wood can be appealing to those who appreciate its authenticity.

Composite decking, on the other hand, aims to mimic the look of wood while providing a more uniform appearance. It is also available in various colours, textures, and finishes, offering a range of design options.

Versatility

Composite decking can be used in various outdoor applications, including decks, patios, pool surrounds, and even as cladding for vertical surfaces. It can be installed using different methods, such as hidden fastening systems, providing flexibility in design and installation options.

Environmental Impact

Let’s admit it, wood decking requires cutting down trees, which has an impact on deforestation.

Composite decking, on the other hand, often incorporates recycled materials, making it a more sustainable choice than traditional timber decking. By using recycled materials, composite decking helps reduce the demand for new timber and minimises waste.

Due to its eco-friendly nature, composite decking is often referred to as eco decking. The sustainibility element of eco deck composite decking not only helps to reduce waste but is also suitable for Australia’s harsh climate.

Cost

The initial cost of composite decking is generally higher than that of wood decking. However, when factoring in the long-term maintenance expenses of timber decking, composite decking can be more cost-effective over time.

What are the disadvantages of composite decking?

While composite decking offers numerous benefits, it’s important to consider some potential disadvantages as well. Here are a few drawbacks associated with composite decking:

Cost

There’s no denying that composite decking generally tends to be more expensive upfront compared to traditional wood decking. The initial cost of materials and installation can be higher, although it’s important to consider the long-term savings in maintenance and durability.

Heat Retention

Composite decking can retain more heat compared to natural wood when exposed to direct sunlight. This means the surface of the decking can become hot to the touch, which may be uncomfortable for bare feet.

However, choosing lighter colours or decking products like WoodEvo specifically designed to reduce heat absorption can mitigate this issue.

Scratching

While composite decking is generally resistant to scratches, it is not entirely scratch-proof. Heavy furniture, pet claws, or sharp objects dragged across the surface can potentially cause very minor scratches or scuff marks.

At WoodEvo our decking has been designed to provide the highest level of scratch resistance, but in the instance that it is scratched, a heat gun can be used to help repair the scratch. If you find yourself in this situation, get in touch with us and we can provide you advice about the best way to fix this.

Limited Repairability

In the event of significant damage to a composite decking board, repairs can be challenging. Unlike wood decking, where individual boards can be replaced relatively easily, composite decking often requires the replacement of an entire section or area due to its manufactured nature and colour consistency.

Expansion and Contraction

Composite decking can expand and contract with temperature changes, which may cause slight gapping or buckling between the boards. Proper installation techniques, including using the manufacturer’s recommended spacing and fastening systems, can help mitigate this issue.

Composite decking price

The cost of composite decking in Australia can vary depending on several factors, including the quality, size, and specific features of the decking product. Additionally, installation costs, location, and any additional accessories or services can impact the overall expense.

On average, the price of composite decking boards in Australia ranges from around $80 to $150 per square meter. This price typically includes the decking boards themselves, but not the cost of installation, substructure, or any additional materials.

Higher-end composite decking products or those with premium features may fall on the higher end of this price range.

How to Install Composite Decking

In terms of installation, composite decking is similar to traditional timber decking. The boards are typically fastened to a substructure using hidden fastening systems or screws. They also often come with grooves or channels on the sides for easy installation and a uniform look.

Keep in mind, however, that while composite decking installation can be a great DIY project for homeowners, do it only if you have the necessary skills and tools and have experience with basic carpentry.

If not, it’s better to call professional installers for a perfect installation. But if you’re a DIY expert, here’s how a composite decking installation would normally play out:

  1. Prepare the area by clearing it of debris and ensuring a level surface.
  2. Create a stable substructure using pressure-treated lumber or steel joists, following local building codes.
  3. Install the joists or support beams onto the substructure, ensuring proper spacing and alignment.
  4. Plan the layout of the decking boards, considering the design and any necessary cutouts.
  5. Fasten the boards using hidden fastening systems or screws, following the manufacturer’s recommendations.
  6. Install the boards, starting from one end and working your way towards the other, leaving gaps for expansion and drainage.
  7. Cut and trim the boards as needed to fit the desired length and shape.
  8. Install any additional components, such as fascia boards or stair treads.
  9. Clean the surface using a mild detergent and water to remove dirt and debris.

Remember to consult the specific manufacturer’s instructions and local building codes for detailed guidance on the installation process.
